Xanthos
Xanthos, described by Strabo asLycia'slargest city, takes its name from the river that flows beside it. Xanthos maintained its independence until 545 B.C. when it was razed in the course of the Persian invasion under the comand of Harpagos. In spite of their defeat, the xanthians passion for heroism and honour was immortalized in the pages of history. It is indeed a tragic tale of invasions, homicide, sui-cide, heroic but useless struggles and fires, which razed the city to the ground. Of the remaining monuments are a Roman Theatre, an agora, a Byzantine basilica, and the famous Harpy Monument, a family sarcophagus built on a rock and dating to 480-470 B.C.
